The Benefits of Lemon Water


We all hear about our favourite bloggers and vloggers drinking lemon water first thing in the morning, but what does it actually do for our bodies? To put it simply, rather a lot! 
Last year I started drinking a huge glass of water in the mornings because I knew I wasn't hydrated enough. I would add in a bit of lemon to make it taste a little more interesting, but it wasn't until I did a bit more research that I realised it actually has a ton of health benefits.

Digestion

Whether you drink it hot or cold, lemon water is great for your digestion! A big glass of lemon water the morning will flush everything out and rehydrate your body. This basically this helps get everything moving so your body can digest food easier, preventing the build up of toxins.  

Detoxification

Hold on to your pants for a second, heres where things get a little sciencey.

Lemon water is a mild diuretic, which means your body and flush out the nasty stuff to detoxify your body and skin. This is also great for your urinary tract as well! The acids in the lemon juice encourages your body to draw out toxins which promotes the liver to produce bile to help the digestion process and it also keeps your insulin levels steady. This means less bloating, yay! 

Vitamin C

Citrus fruits are high in vitamin C which is great for supporting your immune system and can help fight off common colds and give a little boost to your white cell production. Vitamin C has antioxidant properties and studies suggest that it can lower your blood pressure and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and strokes. It can also help lower stress levels which is also incredibly important for your overall health and wellbeing! 

Better Skin

While your body is flushing out toxins from your body, its also getting rid of  toxins that cause skin damage and problems. The antioxidants from the lemon help rejuvenate your skin which keeps it looking fresh and youthful. Vitamin C also encourages your body to produce collagen which fills out any fine lines and the elasticty within your skin. Lets not forget that hydration is key to healthy looking skin, so drink as much water as you can throughout the day. 

Weight Loss

I'm going to start this one off by saying Lemon water alone won't make you lose weight. The best way to do this is a healthy, balanced diet consisting of lots of fruits and veggies and having an active lifestyle, but lemon water can aid in weight loss thanks to the detoxifying benefits. Eat your greens, do your squats and stay hydrated! 

Energy Booster

A big glass of water is going to kickstart your metabolism, rehydrate your body and give you a little energy boost in the morning. It may not be as effective as a cup of coffee, but it's definitely the healthier option!
